John Watlen established a music publishing business in Edinburgh, whence he moved to London in c.1800.

In Thomas Hardy's anecdote (publ. in "Absent mindedness in a village choir") it was a spontaneous and inappropriate outburst of "Devil among the tailors" that prompted the parson to replace the parish gallery musicians with a barrel-organ.
