Canzonet II from Ten Canzonets for a Single Voice, c.1800.
Lyrics: Richard Cumberland

Hope is not always that false dream
That poets make their taunting theme;
Hope to the friend of truth is true,
And hope may be the friend to you.

The spark that threatens to expire,
When fanned, will kindle into fire.
So do but treat her as you should
And hope will make her promise good.

The light that leads the chief astray
May shew the honest man his way:
So hope that baulks the vain request
Inspires and cheers the humble breast.
