Arne's song was composed as the climax of Garrick's Shakespeare Jubilee, a three-day event held in Stratford in the autumn of 1769. The Jubilee itself was of moderate success, being terminated by rain storms, but the song achieved widespread popularity independently.

The variations were probably added by the publisher (Welcker), and not composed by Arne himself.
