Oswald's arrangement of the tune, for German (transverse) flute or violin, appeared in his Collection of Curious Scots Tunes, London c.1742, and the variation was published in his Caledonian Pocket Companion, 1745. The two parts have been transposed from D minor and E minor respectively.
