Un usurier, surpris de maladie,
Voit son danger sans secours diligent.
On lui ordonne outre sa fantasie,
Car rien n'en print, pour le coût de l'argent.
Mais, tôt craignant mourir comme indigent,
Voulait lui mort son service petit,
On lui denie. "Or", dit il, "fausse gens,
Je n'en mourrai encore par dépit".
So this loan-shark, falling ill unexpectedly,
senses his fate without unstinting care;
which he's given, more than he could wish,
with money no object.
But soon, fearing to die a pauper,
he's wanting death's small favour;
It's withheld. So then he's like: "O.K., fickle world,
I won't succumb yet, to spite you".
