Un usurier enterra son avoir
Sous un buisson, craignant de le dépendre.
Un malheureux, rempli de désespoir,
En ce lieu là tout faché se vint rendre.
Ayant cordeau à propos pour se prendre,
Voit le trésor; l'échange à son licol.
L'usurier vint qui ne trouvant que prendre
Fors le cordeau se pendit par le col.

So this loan-shark hides his pile under a sapling,
nervous about dissipating it.
This woebegone reprobate comes along,
to the very same spot.
Having a rope to string himself up,
He sees the stash, and swaps it for his noose.
The loan-shark returns and, finding nothing to retrieve
except the rope, hangs himself by the neck.
