149301 : Cramer (arr.) : Crazy Jane (with variations) : sheet music
Catalogued as Instrumental (Morris)

"Composed by Miss Abrams, and danced in the Ballet of BARBARA and ALLEN as a Pas de trois by Monr. & Madm. Labore, & Madm. Hillesberg, with variations".

The ballad on which this dance was based, with text by Matthew "Monk" Lewis, tells of madness induced in an ingénue by the desertion of her lover. In the late 1790s and the following decade, Lewis's overheated text spawned a dozen settings (of which he himself considered that of Harriet Abrams to be the best), together with numerous imitations. The original song is typical of Miss Abrams' style, popular with contemporaries, but striking a strange note to the modern ear, in which almost jaunty tunes are married to somewhat febrile sentiments; the adaptation as a stage spectacle is also a little incongruous.
