Publ. Vienna, 1819 as Op. 105 no. 2, erroneously described as an air ecossais. The flute or violin part is optional.
The air first appeared in the Richmond Heiress (1693) and was possibly a pre-existing tune or, more likely, written by either Purcell, H. or Eccles, J. to words by Thomas D'Urfey. It was employed in the Beggar's Opera and appeared in dance collections throughout the eighteenth century. Edward Jones (from whom the current version derives) published it as a Welsh folk tune in his "Musical and poetical relicks of the Welsh Bards", 1784.
