From "Thresor de musique d'Orlande de Lassus", 1576.
Lyrics: Joachim du Bellay
La nuit froide et sombre,
Couvrant d'obscure ombre
La terre et les cieux,
Aussi doux que miel,
Fait couler du ciel
Le sommeil aux yeux.
Puis le jour luisant,
Au labeur duisant,
Sa lueur expose,
Et d'un tein divers,
Ce grand univers
Tapisse et compose.
Cold dark night,
With deep shadow covering
Earth and heaven,
Pours sleep, gently as honey,
From the sky into the eyes.
Then lustrous day,
Starting the daily round,
Spreads its light,
And drapes and regales
This great universe
With a multitude of hues.
La nuit froide et sombre,
Couvrant d'obscure ombre
La terre et les cieux,
Aussi doux que miel,
Fait couler du ciel
Le sommeil aux yeux.
Puis le jour luisant,
Au labeur duisant,
Sa lueur expose,
Et d'un tein divers,
Ce grand univers
Tapisse et compose.
Cold dark night,
With deep shadow covering
Earth and heaven,
Pours sleep, gently as honey,
From the sky into the eyes.
Then lustrous day,
Starting the daily round,
Spreads its light,
And drapes and regales
This great universe
With a multitude of hues.
