Edition prepared from the Cathedral Magazine, c.1775. Stroud was a chorister at the Chapel Royal, and a pupil of William Croft. Judging by the number of extant manuscript copies, this anthem was frequently employed in the mid-eighteenth century.
Lyrics: Psalm 55, vv. 1,2,4,6

Hear my prayer, O Lord: and hide not thyself from my petition.
Take heed unto me, and hear me: how I mourn in my prayer, and am vexed.
My heart is disquieted within me: and the fear of death is fallen upon me.
O that I had wings like a dove: then would I flee away, and be at rest.
