Soyez experts d'oreilles et des yeux,
Ou autrement il voudrait mieux se taire.
Mais je vous prie que vous soyez soigneux
De ne chanter si nous n'avez à boire.
Ye musicians that sing at will,
If you wish to give more weight to the note,
Adopt a soft tone and, in just time,
Mindful of the song's meaning,
Conduct yourselves like the linnet,
That takes pleasure in its graceful song.
Be adept of ear and eye,
Or it would be better to be silent.
But I humbly ask you to make sure
Not to sing if you have nothing to drink.
