From Ch. Ch. Mus 19. An anthem composed for use in Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford. It is probable that an organ accompaniment would have been used; there is no reference to an instrumental line, either figured or unfigured, in the autograph score.
Lyrics: Psalm 46: 1-6
God is our hope and strength: a very present help in trouble.
Therefore will we not fear, though the earth be removed: and though the hills be carried into the midst of the sea.
Though the waters rage and swell: and though the mountains quake at the tempest of the same.
The river of the flood thereof shall make glad the city of God.
God is in the midst of her, therefore shall she not be removed.
The heathen make much ado; the kingdoms of the earth are troubled: but God hath shewed his voice, and the earth shall melt away.
