Monsieur l'Abbé et monsieur son valet
Sont faits égaux tous deux comme de cire;
L'un est grand fol, l'autre petit folet;
L'un veut railler, l'autre gaudir et rire;
L'un boit du bon, l'autre ne boit du pire.
Mais un débat au soir entr' eux s'émeut,
Car Maître Abbé toute la nuit ne veut
Être sans vin, que sans secours ne meure;
Et son valet jamais dormir ne peut
Tandis qu'au pot une goutt' en demeure.
So milord the Abbot and his gofer
Are completely the same, cut from the same cloth.
One is a great fool, the other a lesser ass:
One likes to mock, the other to scoff and laugh:
One drinks classy wine, the other doesn't sup rotgut.
But discord seeds itself between them at night
Because milord Abbot doesn't want to spend
All night wineless, in case he expires.without its support,
And the gofer can't slumber
So long as a drop remains in the can.
