149342 : Haydn (arr.) : What avails thy plaintive crying (Ar hyd y ... : sheet music
Catalogued as Choral - Secular (Songs and Concert Airs)

An arrangement commissioned and published, 1809, by Edinburgh publisher G. Thompson, as part of his project to drag folk music into the nineteenth century. The text was specially written by "Monk" Lewis in characteristically febrile Gothick style, perhaps intending to create a Welsh version of Lady Anne Bothwell's lament.
Lyrics: Matthew Gregory Lewis

What avails thy plaintive crying,
Hush, baby, hush!
Though a corpse thy father's lying?
Hush, baby, hush!
Tears and sobs in vain endeavour
Back to call the mourn'd for ever!
Never wilt thou see him, never!
Hush, baby, hush!

See! my grief no tears are telling:
Hush, baby, hush!
Hark! my breast no sighs are swelling;
Hush, baby, hush!
No complaint or murmur making;
Nought betrays my heart is aching;
Yet its breaking, sweet one, breaking.
Hush, baby, hush!

Did the light'ning flash alarm you?
Hush, baby, hush!
While I hold you nought shall harm you.
Hush, baby, hush!
Close and closer still I'll press thee,
Soothe thee still and still caress thee!
See, he smiles. Oh! bless thee, bless thee!
Hush, baby, hush!
