149352 : Jones (arr.) : Of noble race was Shenkin (with variation) : sheet music
Catalogued as Instrumental

The air first appeared in the Richmond Heiress (1693) and was possibly a pre-existing tune or, more likely, written by either Purcell, H. or Eccles, J. (co-contributors to the production) to words by Thomas D'Urfey. It was employed in the Beggar's Opera and appeared in dance collections throughout the eighteenth century. Edward Jones published it as a Welsh folk tune in his "Musical and poetical relicks of the Welsh Bards", 1784, under the title Shenkin, and again in the second edition, 1794, re-titled Y Gâdlŷ's [sic] - The camp of the palace - or Of noble race was Shenkin. His version, in which the first section is spread between both hands, became the template on which composers such as Beethoven based their sets of variations.
